Half-Square Triangle (HST) Tips
Master one of quilting’s most versatile building blocks 🧵🔺
Half-square triangles — often called HSTs — are one of the most common and useful units in quilting. From classic patterns like pinwheels and stars to modern geometric designs, HSTs show up everywhere.
While they’re simple in concept, getting them accurate and consistent can take a little practice. The good news? With a few helpful tips, you can master HSTs and improve your quilt blocks right away.
At Johnson Heirloom, we love helping quilters build confidence with foundational techniques — and HSTs are a great place to start.
What Is a Half-Square Triangle?

A half-square triangle is made by sewing two triangles together to form a square.
Typically, two fabric squares are sewn and cut to create two identical HST units — each with a diagonal seam.
Start Slightly Larger (Trim Down for Accuracy)

One of the best tips for perfect HSTs is to make them slightly oversized, then trim them down.
Why This Works:
- Allows for small cutting or sewing variations
- Improves accuracy
- Helps blocks fit together better
For example:
If you need a 4" finished HST, make it slightly larger and trim it to size after sewing.
Use the 2-at-a-Time Method

The most common way to make HSTs is the 2-at-a-time method.
Steps:
- Place two squares right sides together
- Draw a diagonal line across the back
- Sew ¼" on each side of the line
- Cut along the line
- Press and trim
This method is simple, efficient, and great for beginners.
Press Carefully for Best Results

How you press your HST seams affects how flat and accurate they are.
Tips:
- Press seams to the side for easier nesting
- Or press open to reduce bulk
- Press gently — don’t stretch the fabric
Consistency is key for clean, professional-looking blocks.
Square Up Every HST

Trimming (or “squaring up”) your HSTs is one of the most important steps.
How to Trim:
- Align the ruler’s diagonal line with your seam
- Trim two sides
- Rotate and trim remaining sides
This ensures all your HSTs are the exact same size — which makes assembly much easier.
Watch Your Bias Edges

HSTs include bias edges, which can stretch easily.
To Prevent Distortion:
- Handle pieces gently
- Avoid pulling while sewing or pressing
- Use starch if needed for stability
Taking care with bias edges helps maintain accurate shapes.
Final Thoughts
Half-square triangles are a foundational quilting skill that opens the door to countless designs. With a few simple techniques — like trimming, careful pressing, and gentle handling — you can create accurate, beautiful HSTs every time.
Like many quilting skills, confidence comes with practice. The more HSTs you make, the more comfortable and precise you’ll become.
