🍎 Homemade Cinnamon Sugar Apple Cider Donuts

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cider Reduction: 15–20 minutes
Bake Time: 10–12 minutes
Total Time: Approximately 50 minutes
Yield: 12 baked donuts

🧈 Ingredients

For the Apple Cider Donuts:

  • 1½ cups apple cider (reduced to ½ cup)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon baking soda

  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg

  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled

  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Sugar Coating:

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon

  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted

👩🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Reduce the Apple Cider

Pour 1½ cups of apple cider into a small saucepan.

Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat and cook for approximately 15–20 minutes, or until the cider has reduced to ½ cup.

This step is important because it concentrates the apple flavor, giving your donuts that delicious apple cider taste without adding too much liquid to the batter.

Remove from heat and allow the cider to cool before adding it to your mixture.

Kitchen Tip: Measure the reduced cider to make sure you have ½ cup. If you have more, continue simmering briefly.

Step 2: Prepare Your Oven and Donut Pan

Preheat your oven to 350°F.

Lightly grease two 6-cavity donut pans with nonstick cooking spray or melted butter.

If you only have one pan, you can bake the donuts in two batches.

Step 3: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together:

  • Flour

  • Baking powder

  • Baking soda

  • Cinnamon

  • Nutmeg

  • Cloves

  • Salt

Set aside.

Step 4: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a separate large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar.

Add the eggs, sour cream, vanilla extract, and cooled reduced apple cider.

Mix until smooth and well combined.

Step 5: Combine the Batter

Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients.

Gently stir until just combined.

Be careful not to overmix! Overmixing can make your donuts dense instead of soft and tender.

The batter will be fairly thick.

Step 6: Fill the Donut Pans

Transfer the batter into a piping bag or a large zip-top bag with one corner snipped off.

Pipe the batter into each donut cavity, filling approximately ¾ full.

Using a piping bag makes this step much easier and helps keep the donuts evenly shaped.

Step 7: Bake the Donuts

Bake for 10–12 minutes, or until the donuts are lightly golden and a toothpick inserted into the thickest part comes out clean.

Allow the donuts to cool in the pan for about 5 minutes before carefully transferring them to a wire rack.

Step 8: Make the Cinnamon Sugar Coating

In a shallow bowl, combine the granulated sugar and cinnamon.

Place the melted butter in a separate bowl.

While the donuts are still slightly warm, lightly brush each donut with melted butter.

Roll or sprinkle each donut generously with the cinnamon-sugar mixture until completely coated.

And just like that, you've made homemade apple cider donuts!

🍂 Tips for the Best Apple Cider Donuts

Use real apple cider. Apple cider gives these donuts a richer, more authentic fall flavor than regular apple juice.

Don't skip reducing the cider. This is the secret to getting that wonderful apple flavor in every bite.

Measure your flour carefully. Spoon flour into your measuring cup and level it off to avoid adding too much.

Don't overmix the batter. Stir just until the ingredients are combined for soft, tender donuts.

Coat while slightly warm. The melted butter and cinnamon sugar stick beautifully when the donuts are still a little warm.

Enjoy them fresh. These donuts taste especially delicious the same day they're baked!

☕ What to Serve with Apple Cider Donuts

These donuts pair beautifully with:

  • Freshly brewed coffee

  • Homemade pumpkin spice coffee creamer

  • Hot apple cider

  • Chai tea

  • Hot chocolate

  • A cozy fall breakfast spread

Personally, I think a warm apple cider donut and a good cup of coffee are the perfect way to start a chilly fall morning!

🧺 How to Store Your Donuts

Room Temperature: Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Refrigerator: Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Allow to come to room temperature before enjoying.

Freezer: Freeze uncoated donuts in a freezer-safe container for up to 2 months. Thaw, warm briefly, and add the butter and cinnamon-sugar coating before serving.

For the best texture, warm a donut for a few seconds in the microwave before enjoying.

❤️ A Little Homemade Happiness

One of my favorite things about this time of year is how the simplest things can become the sweetest traditions.

Maybe it's baking something special on a Saturday morning, sharing a plate of warm donuts with your family, or sitting down with a cup of coffee before heading into the sewing room for the day.

Those little moments matter.

At Johnson Heirloom, we're all about creating things that bring comfort, joy, and lasting memories. Sometimes that's a beautiful handmade quilt, and sometimes it's a batch of cinnamon sugar apple cider donuts fresh from the oven.

Both are made with love, and both have a way of bringing people together.

I hope this recipe finds its way into your kitchen and becomes one of your favorite fall traditions.

From our kitchen to yours, happy baking! 🍎❤️
