For the Chicken & Gravy:

  • 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts

  • 2 packets (0.87 oz each) chicken gravy mix

  • 1 can (10.5 oz) condensed cream of chicken soup

  • 1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

  • ½ cup sour cream

  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder

  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • ½ teaspoon paprika (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter (optional)

For Serving:

  • 1½ cups uncooked long-grain white rice

  • 3 cups water, or the amount specified on your rice package

  • ¼ teaspoon salt (optional)

  • 1 tablespoon butter (optional)

  • Fresh chopped parsley, for garnish (optional)

Optional Add-Ins:

  • Sliced mushrooms

  • Diced onions

  • A splash of Worcestershire sauce

  • A pinch of dried thyme

  • A little extra chicken broth to thin the gravy

Kitchen Supplies:

  • 4–6 quart slow cooker

  • Mixing bowl

  • Whisk

  • Forks for shredding chicken

  • Saucepan or rice cooker

👩🍳 Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Prepare Your Slow Cooker

Lightly spray the inside of your crockpot with nonstick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner for easier cleanup.

Place the boneless, skinless chicken breasts in the bottom of the slow cooker in an even layer.

If your chicken breasts are especially large or thick, you can cut them into smaller pieces to help them cook more evenly.

Grandma-Style Tip: You can also use boneless, skinless chicken thighs if you prefer darker meat. They're especially tender and flavorful in slow cooker recipes!

Step 2: Mix Up That Creamy Gravy

In a medium mixing bowl, combine:

  • Both packets of chicken gravy mix

  • Condensed cream of chicken soup

  • Chicken broth

  • Garlic powder

  • Onion powder

  • Black pepper

  • Paprika, if using

Whisk everything together until well combined.

Don't worry if the mixture looks a little thick. As the chicken cooks, it will release juices that blend with the gravy to create a rich, creamy sauce.

Helpful Tip: Gravy packets and condensed soup can contain quite a bit of sodium, so I recommend using low-sodium chicken broth and tasting before adding any extra salt.

Step 3: Pour the Gravy Over the Chicken

Pour your prepared gravy mixture evenly over the chicken breasts.

Use a spoon or spatula to make sure the chicken is coated.

If you're adding mushrooms or diced onions, scatter them around the chicken before cooking.

For a little extra richness, add a tablespoon of butter on top.

Because y'all know a little butter makes just about everything better! 😂🧈

Step 4: Let the Crockpot Do Its Magic!

Cover the slow cooker with the lid.

Cook on:

LOW: Approximately 4–5 hours

Cooking times vary depending on the size of your chicken breasts and your slow cooker.

The chicken is ready when it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F in the thickest part.

Avoid lifting the lid unnecessarily, because every time you peek, you let some of that precious heat escape!

Important: Always start with fully thawed chicken rather than frozen chicken in the slow cooker.

Step 5: Shred the Chicken

Once the chicken is fully cooked, carefully remove it from the crockpot.

Using two forks, shred the chicken into bite-sized pieces.

You can also leave the chicken breasts whole if you prefer serving them that way.

Return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker and stir it into the gravy.

At this point, your kitchen should smell absolutely AMAZING! ❤️

Step 6: Make It Extra Creamy

Stir in the sour cream until completely blended.

For the smoothest texture, let the sour cream sit at room temperature for about 10 minutes before adding it.

Cover and allow everything to heat through for another 5–10 minutes on LOW, without letting the sauce boil vigorously.

If the gravy is too thick, add a splash of warm chicken broth until it reaches your desired consistency.

Taste and adjust the seasonings as needed.

My Favorite Tip: If you love extra gravy over your rice, add a little additional broth while finishing the sauce. Because let's be real, nobody wants dry rice when there's homemade-style gravy involved! 😂

Step 7: Prepare the Rice

About 20–25 minutes before serving, prepare your rice.

In a medium saucepan, bring 3 cups of water to a boil, or follow the liquid ratio listed on your rice package.

Add the rice, salt, and butter if using.

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer according to package directions, typically 15–20 minutes for long-grain white rice.

Remove from heat and let the rice rest, covered, for approximately 5 minutes.

Fluff with a fork.

Step 8: Serve & Enjoy!

Spoon a generous helping of fluffy white rice into each bowl or plate.

Top with tender shredded chicken and plenty of that creamy, delicious gravy.

Sprinkle with fresh parsley if desired.

And y'all… dinner is DONE! 🍗🍚❤️

Serve it with your favorite vegetable or a warm homemade biscuit, and you've got yourself a comforting Southern meal that tastes like it took hours of hard work.

Nobody needs to know the crockpot did most of it! 🤫😂

❤️ Tips for the BEST Crockpot Chicken & Gravy

A few little tricks can make this easy recipe even better!

1. Don't Overcook the Chicken

Chicken breasts can become dry if cooked too long, even in gravy.

Start checking for doneness toward the earlier end of the cooking window and remove the chicken once it reaches 165°F.

2. Use Chicken Thighs for Extra Tenderness

Boneless chicken thighs are a wonderful alternative to chicken breasts.

They contain a little more fat, which helps them stay juicy during slow cooking.

3. Add the Sour Cream at the End

Stirring in sour cream after the chicken has finished cooking helps keep the gravy smooth and creamy.

4. Adjust the Gravy Consistency

If your gravy is too thick, add a little chicken broth.

If it's too thin, mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water, stir it into the hot gravy, and cook on HIGH until thickened.

5. Season to Taste

Since gravy packets and condensed soup already contain salt, wait until the end before adding any extra.

6. Make Extra Rice!

Trust me on this one.

That creamy gravy is so delicious that somebody is definitely going back for seconds! 😂

🧀 Delicious Variations to Try

One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to customize.

🧀 Cheesy Chicken & Gravy

Stir in ½–1 cup shredded cheddar cheese after the chicken finishes cooking.

The cheese melts into the gravy and makes everything extra creamy.

🍄 Chicken & Mushroom Gravy

Add 1 cup sliced mushrooms before cooking.

You can also replace the cream of chicken soup with cream of mushroom soup for a deeper, earthy flavor.

🧅 Southern Onion Chicken & Gravy

Add one small diced onion and a splash of Worcestershire sauce.

This gives the gravy a rich, savory flavor that's wonderful over rice or mashed potatoes.

🌶️ Cajun Chicken & Gravy

Add ½–1 teaspoon salt-free Cajun seasoning for a little Southern kick.

Serve with rice and a side of green beans.

🥦 Chicken, Gravy & Vegetables

Stir in steamed broccoli, peas, or carrots just before serving.

It's an easy way to add vegetables without preparing an entirely separate dish.

🍽️ What to Serve with Crockpot Chicken & Gravy

This meal is delicious all on its own, but if you want to turn it into a full Southern supper, here are a few of my favorite sides.

🧈 Grandma's Southern Buttermilk Biscuits

There's nothing better than a warm, buttery biscuit for soaking up all that extra gravy!

🥬 Southern Green Beans

Tender green beans seasoned with onion and a little bacon pair beautifully with creamy chicken and rice.

🌽 Buttered Corn

Sweet corn adds a little color and balances the savory flavors of the gravy.

🥗 Simple Garden Salad

A fresh salad with crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers makes a lighter side dish.

🥔 Creamy Mashed Potatoes

Not in the mood for rice?

Serve your chicken and gravy over a big scoop of mashed potatoes instead!

🍞 Toasted Garlic Bread

Because sometimes you just need something to scoop up every last drop of that delicious gravy.

❄️ Can You Make Crockpot Chicken & Gravy Ahead of Time?

Absolutely!

This is one of those recipes that makes wonderful leftovers and is perfect for meal prepping.

Refrigerator Storage

Allow the chicken and gravy to cool slightly, then transfer to shallow airtight containers and refrigerate promptly.

Store for 3–4 days.

Store leftover rice separately in the refrigerator and refrigerate it promptly after cooking.

Freezer Storage

The chicken and gravy can be frozen for up to 2–3 months for best quality.

Let it cool, portion into freezer-safe containers, and freeze.

Keep in mind that sour cream-based sauces can sometimes separate slightly after thawing.

For the smoothest results, consider freezing the chicken and gravy before adding the sour cream, then stirring in fresh sour cream when reheating.

How to Reheat

Reheat the chicken and gravy in a saucepan over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally.

Add a splash of chicken broth if the sauce has thickened.

Reheat leftovers to an internal temperature of 165°F.

Rice should also be reheated thoroughly and only reheated once.
