Kitchen Tip: I love using a combination of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp apples. The Granny Smith apples add a little tartness, while the Honeycrisp apples bring natural sweetness and wonderful flavor.
👩🍳 Let's Get Baking!
Step 1: Preheat Your Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Lightly grease an 8" × 8" or 9" × 9" baking dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray.
Set aside.
Step 2: Prepare the Apples
Peel, core, and slice your apples into approximately ¼-inch-thick slices.
Try to keep the slices fairly even so they bake at the same rate.
Place the sliced apples into a large mixing bowl.
And y'all, don't worry if every slice isn't perfect.
That's the beauty of homemade desserts!
They're made with love, not perfection. ❤️
Step 3: Add the Cinnamon and Sugar
To the apples, add the brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, flour, and salt.
Gently toss everything together until the apples are evenly coated.
The flour will help thicken those delicious apple juices as the crisp bakes.
Spread the apple mixture evenly into your prepared baking dish.
Step 4: Make the Buttery Crumble Topping
In a separate mixing bowl, combine the old-fashioned oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
Add the cold, cubed butter.
Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingertips, work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs with some pea-sized pieces.
You want the topping to be crumbly, not smooth.
Those little pieces of butter are what help create that golden, crisp topping!
Step 5: Assemble the Apple Crisp
Sprinkle the oat crumble mixture evenly over the apples.
Make sure the topping covers the apples from edge to edge.
Don't press it down too tightly.
You want the topping to stay light and crumbly so it bakes up beautifully golden.
Step 6: Bake Until Golden and Bubbly
Place the baking dish into your preheated oven.
Bake uncovered for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.
The apples should be tender when pierced with a fork.
If the topping starts browning too quickly, loosely cover the dish with aluminum foil for the remaining baking time.
And y'all, your kitchen is going to smell absolutely AMAZING!
Step 7: Let It Rest
Remove the apple crisp from the oven and allow it to rest for approximately 10–15 minutes.
This gives the filling time to thicken slightly.
I know waiting is the hardest part, especially when the whole house smells like cinnamon and brown sugar! 😂
Step 8: Serve Warm and Enjoy!
Spoon generous portions into dessert bowls.
Top with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
For an extra-special treat, drizzle a little warm caramel sauce over the top.
And there you have it!
A warm, buttery, cinnamon-spiced dessert that tastes like a little piece of home. 🍎❤️
🍏 What Are the Best Apples for Apple Crisp?
Not all apples bake the same way!
Some hold their shape beautifully, while others become very soft during baking.
For the best flavor and texture, I recommend using apples that are firm and have a good balance of sweetness and tartness.
Granny Smith: Tart, firm, and wonderful for balancing the sweetness of the crumble topping.
Honeycrisp: Naturally sweet with a lovely flavor and texture.
Braeburn: A delicious combination of sweet and tart with warm, slightly spicy notes.
Pink Lady: Firm, crisp, and slightly tart.
Golden Delicious: Sweet and tender, especially nice when combined with a firmer apple.
My favorite combination is half Granny Smith and half Honeycrisp.
But honestly, y'all, use the apples your family enjoys most!
✨ Tips for the Best Homemade Apple Crisp
1. Use Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats
Old-fashioned oats give the topping its wonderful texture.
Quick oats can work in a pinch, but the topping won't have quite the same hearty, crumbly texture.
2. Keep the Butter Cold
Cold butter helps create those delicious little crumble pieces.
If your butter becomes too soft while mixing, refrigerate the topping for 10 minutes before baking.
3. Slice Your Apples Evenly
Evenly sliced apples cook more consistently.
This helps prevent some pieces from turning mushy while others remain firm.
4. Don't Skip the Lemon Juice
A little lemon juice brightens the flavor and balances the sweetness.
5. Let the Filling Bubble
The apple juices need to bubble during baking so the flour can properly thicken the filling.
6. Don't Overmix the Topping
You want crumbs and small buttery pieces, not a smooth dough.
7. Serve It Warm
Apple crisp is delicious at room temperature, but there's something extra special about serving it warm with vanilla ice cream.
🍎 Delicious Apple Crisp Variations
Caramel Apple Crisp
Drizzle a few tablespoons of caramel sauce over the apples before adding the topping.
Add a little more caramel when serving!
Apple Pecan Crisp
Mix ½ cup chopped pecans into the crumble topping for a delicious nutty crunch.
Apple Cranberry Crisp
Replace approximately 1 cup of the sliced apples with fresh or frozen cranberries for a sweet-and-tart holiday dessert.
Maple Cinnamon Apple Crisp
Replace 2 tablespoons of the brown sugar in the filling with 2 tablespoons of pure maple syrup.
Extra Spiced Apple Crisp
Add a pinch of ground cloves or allspice to the apple filling for even more warm, cozy flavor.
Apple Pear Crisp
Replace two of the apples with firm pears for a delicious twist on the classic recipe.
🍨 What to Serve with Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp
Y'all, this dessert is pretty wonderful all by itself.
But if you want to make it extra special, try serving it with:
-
Vanilla bean ice cream
-
Homemade whipped cream
-
Warm caramel sauce
-
Cinnamon ice cream
-
A drizzle of maple syrup
-
A hot cup of coffee
-
A warm mug of apple cider
And if you're serving it after a big Sunday dinner?
Keep it simple with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Sometimes the classics are classics for a reason! ❤️
🧊 How to Store and Reheat Apple Crisp
Refrigerator: Allow the apple crisp to cool, then cover tightly and refrigerate within 2 hours. Store for up to 4 days.
Reheating in the Oven: Place the desired portion in an oven-safe dish and warm at 350°F for approximately 10–15 minutes, or until heated through.
Reheating in the Microwave: Heat individual portions in short intervals until warm.
Freezing: Allow the baked apple crisp to cool completely, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 2–3 months for best quality.
Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.
Helpful Tip: Reheating apple crisp in the oven helps restore some of that delicious crunch to the topping.
❤️ Can You Make Apple Crisp Ahead of Time?
Absolutely!
This is a wonderful dessert to prepare ahead of family gatherings or holiday meals.
You can make the crumble topping up to 2 days in advance and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
The apples can also be peeled and sliced several hours ahead. Toss them with the lemon juice and filling ingredients, cover, and refrigerate.
When you're ready to bake, assemble the apple crisp and place it in the oven.
If everything is cold from the refrigerator, you may need a few additional minutes of baking time.
Bake until the apples are tender and the filling is bubbling.
🧵 A Little Baking, a Little Quilting & a Whole Lot of Memories
One of the things I love most about old-fashioned recipes is how they remind us of the people and moments that shaped our lives.
Sometimes all it takes is the smell of cinnamon baking in the oven to bring back a memory you haven't thought about in years.
Maybe it's standing beside Grandma while she peeled apples.
Maybe it's helping Mom sprinkle the crumble topping over a baking dish.
Or maybe it's sitting around the family table, laughing and sharing stories over a homemade dessert.
Those are the memories that stay with us.
And in so many ways, that's exactly what we celebrate here at Johnson Heirloom.
When I'm working on a memory quilt made from a loved one's clothing, I'm reminded that even the smallest pieces can hold the biggest memories.
A favorite shirt.
A well-loved dress.
A piece of fabric that reminds someone of home.
Each piece tells a story.
And I think family recipes do the very same thing.
A handwritten recipe card tucked inside an old cookbook.
A baking dish that's been passed down through generations.
A dessert that shows up at every holiday gathering because everyone knows it wouldn't feel the same without it.
Those things become part of our family traditions.
And just like a quilt, they're made from little pieces of love.
One ingredient at a time.
One stitch at a time.
One memory at a time.
That's why our motto at Johnson Heirloom means so much to me:
Turning today's moments into tomorrow's treasures.
Because sometimes the treasures we leave behind aren't things we can wrap in a box.
Sometimes they're the recipes we teach our children.
The stories we share around the table.
And the memories that come rushing back when we smell apples and cinnamon baking in the oven. ❤️
🏡 A Dessert Worth Passing Down
There's a reason old-fashioned apple crisp has been a family favorite for generations.
It doesn't require anything fancy.
It doesn't have to look perfect.
And it doesn't need a special occasion.
Just fresh apples, a buttery topping, and a little homemade love.
It's the kind of dessert you can make on a quiet Sunday afternoon, bring to a family gathering, or share with someone who could use a little extra comfort.
And who knows?
Maybe one day, someone in your family will be making this very same recipe and remembering the times you made it together.
Now that's a tradition worth keeping. ❤️
