🧁 Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins Recipe

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Bake Time: 20–25 minutes
Total Time: Approximately 45 minutes, plus cooling
Yield: 12 standard muffins

🛒 Ingredients

For the Pumpkin Muffins

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ½ cup granulated sugar

  • ½ cup packed light brown sugar

  • 2 large eggs

  • 1 cup pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling)

  • ½ cup vegetable oil

  • ¼ cup whole milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cream Cheese Filling

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened

  • ¼ cup powdered sugar

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Streusel Topping

  • ⅓ cup all-purpose flour

  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar

  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

👩🍳 Let's Get Baking!

Step 1: Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Line a standard 12-cup muffin pan with paper liners or lightly grease each muffin cup.

Set aside while you prepare the batter.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese Filling

In a medium mixing bowl, combine the softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract.

Beat with a hand mixer until smooth and creamy.

Set aside.

Kitchen Tip: Make sure your cream cheese is softened before mixing. This helps prevent lumps and creates a beautifully smooth filling.

Step 3: Make the Cinnamon Streusel

In a small bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar, and cinnamon.

Pour in the melted butter and stir with a fork until the mixture forms small, crumbly pieces.

Set aside.

Try not to snack on all the streusel before it makes it onto the muffins! 😂

Step 4: Mix the Dry Ingredients

In a large bowl, whisk together:

  • All-purpose flour

  • Baking soda

  • Baking powder

  • Salt

  • Pumpkin pie spice

  • Ground cinnamon

Mix until evenly combined.

Step 5: Mix the Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, whisk together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, pumpkin puree, vegetable oil, milk, and vanilla extract.

Whisk until smooth and well combined.

Step 6: Combine the Muffin Batter

Pour the wet ingredients into the bowl of dry ingredients.

Gently fold everything together with a spatula until just combined.

Be careful not to overmix!

A few small lumps are perfectly fine.

Baking Tip: Overmixing muffin batter can make muffins dense instead of soft and fluffy.

Step 7: Fill the Muffin Cups

Spoon approximately 1½ tablespoons of pumpkin batter into each prepared muffin cup.

Add about 1 tablespoon of the cream cheese mixture to the center of each muffin.

Top with additional pumpkin batter, dividing the remaining batter evenly so the cream cheese filling is mostly covered.

The muffin cups should be approximately ¾ to nearly full.

If you have extra batter, use additional muffin cups rather than overfilling.

Step 8: Add the Streusel Topping

Sprinkle the cinnamon streusel evenly over the tops of the muffins.

Gently press the crumbs into the surface so they adhere while baking.

Step 9: Bake Until Golden

Place the muffin pan in the preheated oven.

Bake for approximately 20–25 minutes, or until the muffin tops are set and a toothpick inserted into the pumpkin cake portion comes out clean or with a few moist crumbs.

Avoid inserting the toothpick directly into the cream cheese center, as the filling will remain soft.

If needed, bake a few minutes longer.

Step 10: Cool and Enjoy!

Allow the muffins to cool in the pan for approximately 10 minutes.

Carefully transfer them to a wire rack to cool further.

The cream cheese filling will be very hot right out of the oven, so give them a little time before taking that first bite.

Serve slightly warm or chilled, depending on your preference.

And there you have it!

Soft pumpkin muffins, creamy cheesecake centers, and buttery cinnamon streusel in every bite! 🎃❤️

✨ Tips for the Best Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

1. Use pure pumpkin puree.

Make sure you're using 100% pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling, which already contains added sugar and spices.

2. Soften the cream cheese.

Room-temperature cream cheese blends smoothly and creates the best filling.

3. Don't overmix the batter.

Stir just until the ingredients are combined to keep your muffins tender.

4. Use fresh spices.

Fresh pumpkin pie spice and cinnamon make a noticeable difference in flavor.

5. Don't overfill the muffin cups.

These muffins rise as they bake, so leave a little room at the top.

6. Let them cool before serving.

The cream cheese filling needs a little time to set.

7. Store them in the refrigerator.

Because these muffins contain a cream cheese filling, they should be refrigerated after cooling.

🍫 Delicious Variations to Try

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

Fold ½ cup mini chocolate chips into the pumpkin batter before assembling the muffins.

Maple Cream Cheese Muffins

Add 1 tablespoon pure maple syrup to the cream cheese filling for a subtle maple flavor.

Pumpkin Pecan Streusel Muffins

Add ¼ cup finely chopped pecans to the streusel topping for extra crunch.

Extra Cinnamon Muffins

Add an additional ½ teaspoon cinnamon to the pumpkin batter for a stronger cinnamon flavor.

No Streusel Version

Skip the streusel topping and sprinkle the muffin tops with a little cinnamon sugar before baking.

They're still absolutely delicious!

☕ What to Serve with Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

These muffins are wonderful all on their own, but they're even better paired with a cozy drink.

Some of my favorites include:

  • Freshly brewed coffee

  • Homemade pumpkin spice coffee creamer

  • Hot apple cider

  • Chai tea

  • A warm vanilla latte

  • Cold milk

For a fall brunch, serve them alongside scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, and crispy bacon.

And if you're hosting a quilting get-together, these make a wonderful treat to set out with the coffee!

🧊 How to Store Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins

Because these muffins have a cream cheese filling, proper storage is important.

Refrigerator: Once completely cooled, store muffins in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

Freezer: Wrap each cooled muffin individually and place in a freezer-safe container or bag. Freeze for up to 2 months for best quality.

Thawing: Thaw frozen muffins overnight in the refrigerator.

Serving: Enjoy chilled or let a muffin sit at room temperature briefly before eating. If you prefer it warm, microwave in short intervals until gently warmed.

Food Safety Tip: Refrigerate the muffins within 2 hours after baking and cooling.

❤️ Can You Make These Muffins Ahead of Time?

Absolutely!

These muffins are a wonderful make-ahead option for busy mornings, holiday gatherings, and weekend baking.

You can bake them the night before, allow them to cool, and store them in the refrigerator.

The flavors develop beautifully as they rest, and the cream cheese filling becomes slightly firmer.

They're perfect for grabbing with your morning coffee before starting the day.

🧵 Pumpkin Muffins, Coffee & a Little Quilting Time

Some of my favorite mornings start with a fresh cup of coffee, something homemade from the kitchen, and a little time in the quilting studio.

There's always something waiting to be done at Johnson Heirloom.

Fabric to cut.

Quilts to piece.

Keepsakes to create.

Orders to package.

And usually a few more projects waiting patiently for their turn! 😂

But I love those little moments when I can slow down just enough to enjoy a warm muffin and a good cup of coffee.

It's funny how baking and quilting have so much in common.

Both start with simple ingredients.

Both require a little patience.

And both create something special that can be shared with the people we love.

Whether it's a beautiful quilt made from treasured fabrics or a family recipe passed down through generations, the most meaningful things are often the ones made with our own two hands.

🏡 More Than Just a Muffin

At Johnson Heirloom, we believe heirlooms aren't always made with fabric and thread.

Sometimes they're the handwritten recipes tucked into an old cookbook.

The smell of pumpkin and cinnamon filling the kitchen every fall.

The family traditions we look forward to year after year.

And those sweet little moments that become treasured memories.

These Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins are the kind of recipe that could easily become a new fall tradition.

Something to bake on a chilly Saturday morning.

Something to share with friends.

Or something to enjoy while spending a little quiet time doing what you love.

Because sometimes the simplest traditions are the ones that stay with us the longest.

❤️ From Our Kitchen to Yours

Whether you're baking for your family, preparing for a fall gathering, or simply treating yourself to something sweet, I hope you love these Pumpkin Cream Cheese Muffins.

They're soft.

They're sweet.

They're filled with creamy goodness.

And they're perfect for sharing.

Happy baking, y'all! 🎃🧁❤️
