👩🍳 Let's Get Cooking!

Step 1: Preheat Your Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

Lightly grease a 9" × 13" baking dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray.

Set aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Chicken Filling

In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken, cream of chicken soup, sour cream, ½ cup chicken broth, garlic powder, and black pepper.

Stir until everything is evenly coated in the creamy mixture.

Spread the chicken mixture evenly across the bottom of your prepared baking dish.

This creates a delicious, creamy chicken layer underneath the dressing.

Step 3: Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.

Add the diced onion and celery.

Cook for approximately 6–8 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.

Remove from the heat.

And y'all, if there's one smell that instantly reminds me of Southern holiday cooking, it's onions and celery cooking in butter! ❤️

Step 4: Prepare the Cornbread Dressing

In a large mixing bowl, combine the crumbled cornbread and cubed day-old bread.

Add the sautéed onion and celery, along with all the melted butter from the skillet.

Sprinkle in the sage, poultry seasoning, thyme, black pepper, salt, and optional parsley.

Gently toss everything together.

Step 5: Add the Broth and Eggs

Pour approximately 2 cups of chicken broth into the cornbread mixture.

Stir gently to moisten the bread.

Add the remaining broth a little at a time until the dressing is very moist but not soupy.

The exact amount depends on how dry your cornbread is.

Taste and adjust the seasoning before adding the eggs.

Once you're happy with the flavor, stir in the lightly beaten eggs until evenly incorporated.

Southern Cooking Tip: The dressing should look a little wetter than you think it needs to be before baking. Cornbread absorbs quite a bit of moisture as it cooks.

Step 6: Assemble the Casserole

Spoon the prepared cornbread dressing evenly over the creamy chicken layer.

Spread gently without packing it down too tightly.

You want the dressing to stay light and tender rather than dense.

For a slightly crispier top, dot with an additional tablespoon of butter if desired.

Step 7: Bake Until Golden

Cover the baking dish loosely with aluminum foil.

Bake at 350°F for 25 minutes.

Remove the foil and continue baking for another 15–20 minutes, or until the top is lightly golden and the center reaches 165°F.

If the top starts browning too quickly, cover loosely with foil again.

Step 8: Rest and Serve

Remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to rest for approximately 10 minutes.

This gives the dressing time to set slightly and makes serving easier.

Spoon generous portions onto plates and serve warm.

And if you really want to take it over the top?

Add a little warm chicken gravy!

Because in the South, a little gravy makes just about everything better. 😂❤️

✨ Tips for the Best Southern Chicken & Dressing

1. Use homemade cornbread if possible.

Traditional Southern cornbread gives this casserole that wonderful old-fashioned flavor and texture.

2. Day-old cornbread works best.

Slightly dried cornbread absorbs the broth without becoming overly mushy.

3. Don't skimp on the sage.

Sage is one of the signature flavors of Southern dressing, but feel free to adjust it to your family's taste.

4. Keep the dressing moist.

Dry dressing is nobody's favorite! Add enough broth to create a soft, moist mixture before baking.

5. Use rotisserie chicken for an easy shortcut.

It's a wonderful way to save time without sacrificing flavor.

6. Don't pack the dressing down.

Spread it gently over the chicken layer for a lighter texture.

7. Let the casserole rest before serving.

A few minutes of resting helps everything hold together.

🌽 Homemade Cornbread or Cornbread Mix?

Both will work!

If you have a favorite family cornbread recipe, this is the perfect time to use it.

For a more traditional Southern flavor, I recommend cornbread that's not overly sweet.

However, if you're short on time, a boxed cornbread mix works just fine.

Just make sure you prepare and bake the cornbread first, then crumble it for the dressing.

Important: The recipe calls for 6 cups of already-baked, crumbled cornbread—not 6 cups of dry cornbread mix.

🍗 Easy Ways to Make This Recipe Your Own

Extra Creamy Chicken & Dressing

Add an additional ¼ cup sour cream to the chicken mixture for an extra-rich filling.

Chicken & Dressing with Mushrooms

Sauté 1 cup chopped mushrooms with the onions and celery.

Southern Sausage Dressing Casserole

Brown ½ pound of breakfast sausage, drain well, and mix it into the dressing for a heartier variation.

Turkey & Dressing Casserole

Have leftover Thanksgiving turkey?

Use it in place of the chicken!

This is a wonderful way to turn holiday leftovers into another delicious family meal.

Old-Fashioned Chicken & Dressing Without Cream Soup

Skip the condensed soup and make a homemade cream sauce using butter, flour, chicken broth, and milk.

It's a delicious alternative if you prefer everything made from scratch.

🥘 What to Serve with Southern Chicken & Dressing Casserole

This casserole is hearty enough to be the star of the dinner table, but a few Southern side dishes make it even better!

Some of our favorites include:

  • Southern-style green beans

  • Creamy mashed potatoes

  • Homemade chicken gravy

  • Sweet potato casserole

  • Buttery corn

  • Cranberry sauce

  • Collard greens

  • Freshly baked dinner rolls

And for dessert?

You can't go wrong with a warm peach cobbler, banana pudding, or a slice of homemade pecan pie.

Now THAT sounds like a proper Southern Sunday dinner! ❤️

🧊 How to Store and Reheat Leftovers

Refrigerator: Allow leftovers to cool slightly, then transfer them to airtight containers and refrigerate within 2 hours. Store for up to 3–4 days.

Reheating: Place leftovers in a covered baking dish at 350°F until heated through to 165°F. Add a splash of chicken broth if the dressing seems dry.

Individual portions can also be reheated in the microwave.

Freezing: Cool the baked casserole promptly, wrap tightly, and freeze for up to 2–3 months for best quality.

Thaw overnight in the refrigerator before reheating.

❤️ Can You Make Chicken & Dressing Casserole Ahead of Time?

Absolutely!

This recipe is perfect for holiday meal preparation or busy family schedules.

For the best texture, prepare the cooked chicken mixture and the dry cornbread dressing ingredients separately up to one day ahead.

Store them covered in the refrigerator.

When you're ready to bake, assemble the chicken layer, add the broth and eggs to the dressing, spread it over the chicken, and bake.

If the ingredients are cold from the refrigerator, you may need a few additional minutes in the oven.

Always bake until the center reaches 165°F.

🧵 A Little Cooking, a Little Quilting & a Whole Lot of Memories

Some recipes are special because they taste delicious.

Others are special because of the memories they bring back.

And I think Southern Chicken & Dressing is one of those recipes that does both.

It reminds me of family gatherings, holiday dinners, and the familiar comfort of sitting around a table filled with homemade food.

At Johnson Heirloom, so much of what we do revolves around preserving memories.

We take treasured clothing and transform it into memory quilts.

We turn meaningful fabrics into keepsake pillows and teddy bears.

And we create handmade heirlooms that families can hold close for generations.

But I've always believed that memories aren't only preserved in fabric.

Sometimes they're preserved in recipes.

In the smell of cornbread baking.

In the familiar flavor of sage and chicken broth.

And in those family meals that become traditions without us even realizing it.

In a way, making dressing reminds me of making a quilt.

You start with individual pieces.

Each one has a purpose.

And with a little patience, love, and care, they all come together to create something beautiful.

One piece at a time.

One stitch at a time.

One memory at a time.

🏡 More Than Just a Casserole

There's something wonderful about recipes that get passed down through generations.

Maybe your grandmother made her dressing with homemade cornbread.

Maybe your mom added a little extra sage.

Or maybe your family has a secret ingredient that nobody else knows about!

Those little differences are what make family recipes so special.

They're part of our stories.

Part of our traditions.

And part of the memories we carry with us.

That's why I love sharing recipes here on The Heirloom Quilter Blog.

Because heirlooms aren't always made with fabric and thread. Sometimes they're the recipes, traditions, and memories we pass down around the family table.

And this Southern Chicken & Dressing Casserole is definitely one worth adding to your recipe collection.
