✂️ Cutting Instructions

  • Backing: 1 rectangle – 8½” x 10½”

  • Binding: 2½” wide strips (join to make ~40”)

Optional:

  • Heart shapes (4–5” wide) from coordinating scraps

🧷 Step 1: Make the Quilt Sandwich

Layer fabrics in this order:

  1. Backing (wrong side up)

  2. Batting

  3. Top fabric (right side up)

Pin or clip securely.

❤️ Step 2: Add Appliqué (Optional)

  1. Fuse heart shapes to the top fabric using fusible web.

  2. Press according to manufacturer instructions.

  3. Stitch around the hearts using:

    • Zigzag

    • Satin stitch

    • Blanket stitch

    • Straight stitch for a modern look

Valentine tip: Red, pink, florals, and low-volume prints work beautifully.

🪡 Step 3: Quilt the Mug Rug

Quilt through all layers using:

  • Straight lines

  • Diagonal grids

  • Stitch-in-the-ditch

  • Free-motion hearts or loops

Start quilting near the center and work outward to prevent shifting.

📐 Step 4: Trim and Square Up

Trim the quilted piece down to 8” x 10”, ensuring all edges are straight and square.

🧵 Step 5: Prepare the Binding

  1. Join binding strips end-to-end.

  2. Press seams open.

  3. Fold binding in half lengthwise, wrong sides together.

🪡 Step 6: Attach the Binding

  1. Align raw edges of binding with raw edge of mug rug.

  2. Sew to the front using a ¼” seam allowance.

  3. Miter corners neatly.

  4. Join binding ends and finish sewing.

🧷 Step 7: Finish the Binding

  • Fold binding to the back.

  • Hand stitch for a traditional finish or

  • Machine stitch for durability and speed.

✨ Step 8: Final Press

Give your mug rug a final press, trim threads, and enjoy!

💕 Optional Variations

  • Add embroidered words like “Love”, “XOXO”, or “Be Mine”

  • Use scrappy patchwork instead of a solid top

  • Make a matching set of 2 or 4
